ECHA: nearly 300 chemicals have been identified as key regulatory targets

In 2020, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) sub group assessed about 1900 registered chemicals.

If the hazards of these chemicals are identified after the assessment, 290 of them may be candidates for further EU regulatory risks.

On April 21, 2021, Helsinki time, ECHA issued the third comprehensive regulatory strategy report, which describes the latest work of ECHA in assessing and managing chemicals that may pose risks to human and environment, and puts forward suggestions on risk management and control to the government and industry.

In 2019, ECHA will change its assessment method from evaluating each chemical individually to classifying and combining chemical substances with similar structures and treating them in groups.

This grouping method has greatly speeded up the pace, with the total number of chemicals assessed in 2020 increasing to about 1900 (double that in 2019 and ten times that screened each year between 2014 and 2018).

Hazard classification should be carried out before risk management

According to the grouping assessment completed in 2020, ECHA has identified 290 chemical substances as candidates for further risk management in the EU, but most of them need to confirm the hazard classification * before taking corresponding measures.

*Reach and other EU regulations require that in order to take risk management measures for chemical substances, the hazard classification of chemical substances must be unified.

In addition, according to the available hazard classification and use information, about two-thirds of the substances do not need risk management.

In the follow-up, ECHA will continue to carry out the corresponding evaluation work on each group of substances, and relevant enterprises need to update the files in time and actively respond to avoid causing unnecessary trouble.
