Metal Complex Dyes
01What are metal complex dyes?

Dyes whose molecule is built around a metal atom, usually chromium or cobalt, bound to one or two dye ligands. The metal ties the molecule together, which is what gives these dyes their light fastness and their heat stability compared with plain azo dyes.

02What are metallic dyes also known as?

Metal complex dyes, premetallized dyes, or chrome and cobalt complex dyes. The solvent soluble type, which is what we supply, is also sold as metal complex solvent dyes for stains, inks and foils.

03What are metal complex acid dyes?

The water soluble branch of the same chemistry, used on wool, silk, nylon and leather in an acid bath. Our range is the solvent soluble branch, made for wood stains, printing and stationery inks, aluminium foil and hot stamping foil, and solvent based coatings.

04Why are metal complexes coloured?

The metal centre and the ligands around it split the electron energy levels, so the molecule absorbs part of the visible spectrum and reflects the rest. That same structure holds the molecule stable under light, which is why most shades in our range are rated 7 on the 1 to 8 light fastness scale.

05What are metal complex dyes used for?

Wood stains and low temperature baking finishes, printing and stationery inks, aluminium foil colouring and hot stamping foil, leather finishes and solvent based plastic coatings. The brochure gives solubility in alcohol, glycol ethers, MEK, ethyl acetate and toluene so you can check compatibility before you order.
