01What are fatty amines?
Amines with a long fatty chain, from C12 to C18, made from natural fats and oils. Dodecyl, cocamine, hydrogenated tallow and stearyl amine at 95 to 98% purity. They are the starting point for cationic surfactants, flotation agents, softeners and antistatics.
02What are common examples of amines?
In industry, the fatty primary amines such as dodecylamine and stearylamine, the difatty methyl tertiary amines, and the quaternary ammonium salts made from them. Add DADMAC monomer for water treatment and papermaking, and glycoside surfactants such as APG for daily chemicals.
03What is quaternary ammonium compound used for?
Fabric softening, antistatic finishing, bentonite treatment for oilfield and coatings, hair care and disinfection. Our D1817 benzyl methyl dioctadecyl ammonium chloride runs 74 to 78% active, and DADMAC monomer comes at 60 or 65% for water treatment and papermaking.
04What is the disadvantage of quaternary ammonium compounds?
They are cationic, so they clash with anionic surfactants in the same formula and can foam or precipitate. Some grades load the effluent and face tighter rules in certain markets. Tell the division the system and the market and they point to the grade that fits.
05Are amines toxic to humans?
Fatty amines are alkaline and irritating in concentrate form, which is why they ship in 160 kg galvanized drums and are handled with the protection on the safety data sheet. Downstream they end up as surfactants dosed at low levels. Every grade lists its specification, packing and storage conditions.
