Solvent Dyes
01What are solvent dyes?

Dyes that dissolve in an organic medium instead of dispersing as particles. Because there are no particles to scatter light, the color comes out transparent and strong, which is what a tinted plastic housing or a clear coating needs.

02What is the best dye for plastic?

For transparent parts, a solvent dye. It dissolves in the polymer melt and colors without haze. For opaque parts you want a pigment, since a dye cannot hide anything. Tell us the polymer and the process temperature and the pigments division names the grade.

03Can you permanently dye plastic?

Yes, when the color goes in during compounding or molding. A solvent dye dissolved in the melt stays in the part. Surface dyeing of a finished part is a different job and it wears off. Heat stability and migration decide which grade fits your process.

04What is the difference between pigment and dye?

Solubility. A dye dissolves in the medium and gives transparent color. A pigment stays as solid particles in suspension and gives opacity and hiding power. Dyes usually win on brightness and transparency, pigments on light fastness and coverage.

05What are some examples of solvent dyes?

Our line leads with Solvent Yellow 10GN, a greenish transparent yellow, and Solvent Orange 116. The rest of the oil soluble range is on the current card, shade by shade. Ask the pigments division for the card and the data sheets.
